Remedial Massage
Many people today suffer with back, neck and shoulder pain and other related aches and pains causing discomfort and often restricted movement. This may often be a result of poor posture, physical injury, or tension, causing muscles to be in a contracted state for long periods. Remedial Massage is a proven and very effective technique for dealing with muscular and other soft tissue problems. Some common conditions that can be improved by Remedial Massage are:
The art of remedial massage dates back to prehistoric times with origins in India, China, Japan, Greece and Rome. The word therapeutic comes from the Greek therapeutikos and is defined as 'of or relating to the treatment or cure of a disorder or disease'. The word massage also comes from the Greek masso meaning to knead.
It was first accepted to be scientific in the 19th century. Although it drifted out of fashion with the incessant drive towards technology it is available in some G.P. surgeries, hospitals, health centres, massage schools, sports centres and beauty clinics. Massage cannot lay claim to cure illness but it should not be dismissed as a luxury either. It makes you feel good, outside and in. Gentle massage is painless and effective, treating people for a wide variety of complaints including asthma, arthritis, backache, joint and muscle sprains, headaches, cramp, high blood pressure, insomnia and rheumatism. It works by increasing the blood circulation to the area. It enhances the flow of lymph, the body's natural weapon against injury. It is based on a philosophy that the body always wants to be well and so encourages natural healing. Information Courtesy of London & Counties Society of Physiologists (LCSP)
How it works
Remedial Massage is deep tissue massage that is used to treat injuries and disorders of the soft tissues in the body. It can often be quite vigorous and not at all like a relaxing massage that you may have experienced as part of a beauty therapy treatment. The aim is to increase the circulation of the blood and lymphatic systems and to remove any blockages. This helps to remove damaged cells and increases the blood flow to the injured area, speeding up recovery and encouraging healing. Regular massage can help to ensure that small injuries are treated before they reduce muscular performance so is particularly beneficial to those who regularly participate in sports. Massage is also and effective way of removing scar tissue that may remain after old injuries and can prevent a return to full fitness and mobility, it is also an effective treatment to help to reduce instances of repeat injuries.
What to expect
On your first visit you will be asked questions about your current condition/injury and also your general health, medical history, life style etc. This is to help me reach a working diagnosis of you condition and to exclude any contra indications to the treatment. You will be asked to remove some items of clothing to allow for a physical examination and a towel will be provided to protect modesty. The massage takes place on a comfortable, padded massage table, extra pillows will be used to enable you to be as comfortable as possible. During the massage only the part of the body being treated will be uncovered, ensuring that modesty is respected at all times. The Remedial Masseur is Andy Pyatt. |
