Basic Nutrition
Nutrition...
How low can we go? It's a good question. Most people we see are malnourished.
There
are approximately ninety nutrients the body needs on a daily basis: up to
sixty minerals, sixteen vitamins, twelve amino acids and three fatty acids.
There are other things that the body would like but at a push it can make
them from the other ninety.
Now the
body can only repair itself from the raw materials you provide for it, so
if you have any doubts about being able to provide those ninety nutrients
on a daily basis you may want to consider taking a good nutritional supplement,
at least in the short term until you recover.
So does
your diet provide those ninety nutrients on a daily basis? Well, if you ate
a fresh, local, organic diet of which 75% was raw you would need to eat about
thirty two different foodstuffs a day to provide those ninety nutrients.
Not many peoples diets are that broad.
So why
would anyone need a nutritional supplement if they were eating a balanced
diet? Cant we get everything we need from our food? In an ideal world
we would, however, we dont live in an ideal world.
There
are three main reasons why we dont get what we need from our food.
The first is that most peoples diets are not broad enough. The second
is that most of the food we buy has been treated in some way to prolong
shelf-life and/or storage times, which removes nutritional factors. And the
third is that our soils have been over farmed so there is little in the way
of minerals left in the soil. Unlike vitamins and amino acids, plants can
not make minerals. If they are not in the soil then they are not in the plants
that grow in them.
The following
audio program "Nutrition...How low can we go?" tell you what steps you can
take to make sure you have good foundational nutrition.

Antioxidants
This
audio presentation is about combating oxygen free-radicals.
Oxygen
free-radicals are rogue oxygen molecules that are missing an electron. They
cause all sorts of damage in the body. They are implicated in over 60 causes
of death, responsible for degeneration of the body and speed up the ageing
process. So if you want to add years to your life and life to your years
you need to protect yourself from the ravages of oxygen free-radicals.
Antioxidants
protect against free-radical damage. The body manufactures antioxidants,
such as superoxide dismutase, which neutralise the free-radicals. However,
as we age the body's ability to make these antioxidants diminish, and this
is one of the reasons why young people heal faster than older people. To
overcome this shortfall the body will recruit antioxidant vitamins away from
their biological processes to neutralise the free-radicals. This then has
a knock-on effect to other areas of the body, which are now short of their
vital nutrients.
So if
we are getting our 90 nutrients on a daily basis why do we need additional
antioxidants? The body is brilliant at coping in the environment we evolved
in. Unfortunately our present environment has pollutants in the food we eat,
the water we drink and the air we breathe. Pollutants cause massive numbers
of free-radicals to challenge our bodies.
What
constitutes a good antioxidant supplement? Broad spectrum is the answer.
It should contain super antioxidants such as oligomeric proanthocyanadins
(OPC's for short), which are water soluble and fat soluble, beta-carotene,
vitamin C and vitamin E, flavanoids and, if possible, curcuminoids.

Fats that Heal, Fats
that Kill
This
audio presentation is called Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill and is by Dr.
Udo Erasmus, the world's leading expert on nutritional fats.
This
is the definitive guide to the subject of fats. It is aimed at lay people
and uses simple words to clarify what is often seen as a bewildering subject.
After
listening to this you will probabley understand fats much better than your
doctor does, unless they've listened to this too!

Minerals
So why
would anyone need a nutritional supplement if they were eating a balanced
Most
people in this culture need supplements.
So how
can you tell if a supplement is any good or not? The form that the supplement
is in is often a good clue. For instance if they are solid tablets the absorption
rate is often poor, as low as 4% in the case of some metallic minerals. That
means 96% is excreted! Chelated minerals are a bit better in that about 40%
are absorbed, but that still leaves about 60% of them to be excreted. By
far the best absorption rates come from ionised sub-colloidal minerals, up
to 98%, and these are only available in liquid form.
Also
its is more effective to take small amounts of broad spectrum nutritional
components at the correct ratio to each other than it is to take large amounts
of them not at the correct ratio. These ratios can often be quite tricky
to work out from the label information.
This
audio presentation is called Phenominal Fulvates, and is about why this type
of supplement is so effective.

House of Horrors
In 1989
the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration checked the safety
of chemicals used in toiletries and cosmetics.
They
found that 884 were toxic: and of that 884
-
778 caused
acute toxicity
-
378 caused
skin and eye irritations
-
314 caused
biological mutation
-
218caused
reproductive complications
-
146 caused
tumours
In 1997
the U.S. General Accounting Office went on to say that of those 884
-
125 caused
cancer
-
"Many
Others" (?!) caused birth defects
Since
then how many of these ingredients have been removed from use? Shockingly
none.
All we
can do as consumers is to vote with our pockets and buy from companies who
don't use these toxic ingredients in their products. If you find them hard
to find we can put in touch with the company we use.
So here
is an audio presentation by Valerie Singleton called the House of Horrors.

The Winnable War Against
Cancer
Why we're
still dying to know the truth!
Do you
know that the latest cancer statistics are that 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women
will get cancer in their lifetime.
Shocking
isn't it.
What
would you do if you were diagnosed with cancer?
Furthermore
what can you do to prevent getting cancer in the first place?
Like
a Pension
I aim
to be able to work for quite a long time but I have made provision in the
event that I have to retire. I have a pension. It is no good deciding to
start a pension fund when you retire, you must start a pension fund before
you retire.
It's
similar with my health. I have good lifestyle practices which will help me
keep healthy but what if I am diagnosed with cancer some time in the future.
I should imagine that I would be so shocked by the fact that I won't be able
to rationally decide on the best course of action. That's why I have been
reviewing the options open to me now.
In the
unlikely event I won't be able to carry on working I am prepared. In the
unlikely event I get cancer I am also prepared.
This
audio program is called "The Winnable War Against Cancer". It is for anyone
who has cancer, knows someone with cancer, or doesn't want to get cancer.

Probiotics
This
audio program introduces the topic of probiotics, the good bacteria present
in our gastro-intestinal tracts.
Probiotics
can help to rehabilitate the bowel, but they have many more beneficial effects
throughout the body. This fascinating presentation will outline some of those
for you.
If you
are interested in have the benefits that probiotics can give you talk to
Sue, as she can get you some extremely high potency ones. Plus she is the
bowel queen, so feel free to ask her anything you like about the subject.
As an aside Allyn worked for the NHS for 15 years as a bacteriologist and
an immunologist so between them there isn't anything they don't know about
poo.

Methyl Sulphonyl Methane,
or MSM for short
MSM is
a form of organic sulphur which is vital for the welbeing of all the systems
in our bodies. Most people are short on this vital nutrient as there is less
and less of it in our diet.
This
audio program called Uninvited Guests by Rick Hendell gives you the history
of MSM, how it was discovered and how to use it. He starts off talking about
allergies but as he progresses you will see that it has many and wide bearing
properties.
This
is one of the vital nutritional supplements we take on a daily basis.

Aloe Vera
Aloe
vera is a fairly well known herbal preparation with a long history of use,
the health benefits of its large leaves were first discovered by the Egyptians
several thousand years ago. A member of the Lilly family, the aloe vera plant
grows throughout the African continent.
The gel
like substance produced by the aloe vera plant is a natural soother that
can alleviate the pain of cuts, burns or general irritation and inflammation.
Aloe
vera contains 9 out of the 10 most important amino acids, the essential
regenerative 'building blocks' of protein and trace elements of potassium,
copper, magnesium, calcium, chromium and zinc. It is rich in saponins (natural
antiseptics) and anthraquinones with their antibiotic, antiviral and
anti-inflammatory properties. It is believed that the polysaccharides containing
glucose, mannose, galactose, xylose, arabinose enzymes all contribute to
blood cell enrichment and hence 'healing body chemistry'. It is most commonly
taken as a gel drink.
A team
from the Barts and London, Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Dentistry
have carried out tests which show that the herb has a beneficial effect on
the production of substances which help boost the healing process in cases
of ulceration in the gut.
The
researchers believe aloe vera could be particularly valuable in treating
ulcers caused as a side effect of taking anti-inflammatory NSAID drugs.
Aloe
Vera juice is famed for its ability to clean the liver. This helps in its
ability to heal the skin and reduce acne, eczema and psoriasis. It is a great
healing herb used to protect the digestive system and is renowned for it
ability to reduce intestinal inflammation. It is a potent cleansing and
rejuvenating elixir.
Generally
aloe vera is a great anti-inflammatory, it doesn't matter if this inflammation
is in the gut or in the joints; the gel reduces the effect of inflammatory
hormones. Therefore it may help you if you are suffering from digestive
disturbances such as IBS, or joint problems such as arthritis.

Noni Juice
People
often ask us what supplements we take on a daily basis. When we tell them
that we take Noni, we are usually met with blank looks.
If you
haven't heard about Noni, why haven't you? It is one the single best fruits
that you can put in your body.
Noni,
or Morinda Citrifolia to give it its Latin name, is a fruit found all over
the pacific islands and has been used for thousands of years by the natural
healers there. It is an adaptogen, which means it brings the body back to
a state of normality. So if something is too active it slows it down and
if something is not active enough it speeds it up.
It is
able to do this by being chock full of something call polysaccharides, which
the body uses to communicate between cells.
This
audio program is by Dr Steven Hall and is called Noni Through the Body. It
is a brilliant introduction to the amazing benefits of this fruit.
