A Couple of Cleansing Recipies

These recipies also tie in with our detox series.

Fresh vegetable juice

This will stimulate your system into a mini cleanse. Have a glass before lunch or your evening meal, drink it slowly and allow 10 minutes to pass before eating anything else.

For 1 large serving:

8 small carrots 1 stalk celery

¼ small beetroot 1 medium tomato

1 small red or green pepper 1 small handful of spinach or fresh parsley

Wash the vegetables, cut the bitter, green ends off the carrots and peel, especially if they are not organic. Put all the vegetables through the juicer.

The carrots and celery are the basics, you may add any other vegetables. 1/2 to 2/3 of the juice should be carrot.

Swede and Barley soup.

This will warm you up and provide lots of fibre for the intestines and so help with elimination. This is a recipe from the cranks book of soups and starters.

Serves 4-6

1 oz/25g butter 1 onion roughly chopped

1 lb/450g swede, roughly chopped 11/2 tsp grated orange rind

2 pint/1.2 L vegetable stock 1 vegetable stock cube

3 oz/75g pot barley 1 bay leaf

3 tbsp/45 ml orange juice Salt & pepper to taste

Orange rind blanched in water for 1 minute and shredded to garnish

Melt the butter in a large saucepan.

Add the onion, swede and grated orange rind and cook over a medium heat for 5 minutes.

Add the stock and stock cube, pot barley and bay leaf.

Cover and cook until the barley is tender, about 45 minutes.

Allow to cool slightly, remove the bay leaf.

Blend the soup adding the orange juice.

Season to taste and serve garnished with the shredded orange rind.
