CONNECTIONS to HEALTH |
Pottenger's Cats
I often tell this story to patients in my practice room and the last time I told it the person said "You should put this in the newsletter", so here it is.
Francis Marion Pottenger Jnr M.D.
Francis Pottenger undertook some research in the 1930's on the effects of processed food on health.
He took two populations of cats. One group was fed with raw food. They lived healthily to a ripe old age, and died of natural causes. The second group was fed processed food. They lived to a ripe old age but developed degenerative disease in old age.
Second Generation
He bred these populations of cats. The second generation of raw food cats lived healthily to a ripe old age, and died of natural causes. The second generation of processed food cats lived a shortened life span and developed degenerative disease in middle age.
Third Generation
He bred these populations of cats again. The third generation of raw food cats lived healthily to a ripe old age, and died of natural causes. The third generation of processed food cats lived shorter lives again and were either born with developmental problems or developed degenerative disease in their youth.
Fourth Generation
He was never able to go beyond the third generation as the third generation of processed food cats were very aggressive and had so many conception problems that to all intents and purposes they could no longer breed.
Society Today
Now I'm not one for jumping to conclusions here but doesn't it sound a bit like some of the social problems we are having today?
I know so-called yob culture is fuelled by cheap booze but levels of aggression do seem to be rising. Also we all know people who are having difficulties in conceiving.
Perhaps we need to look to our diets for the sake of future generations as well as for our own health.
The Price-Pottenger Nutritional Foundation
The Price-Pottenger Nutritional Foundation was set up in 1952 to preserve and promote the work of Francis Pottenger and Weston Price, who was another early nutritional researcher. They are a valuable resource for the world and need our support.
