 CONNECTIONS to HEALTH

We often mention the philosophy of Chiropractic when we are talking to our patients.  But here's a question.  Why does Chiropractic need a philosophy?  You don't hear about the philosophy of dentistry, or the philosophy of optometry.

So why should Chiropractic be any different?

Well the simple answer is that Chiropractic doesn't have a philosophy, it is a philosophy; and when we give a Chiropractic adjustment to someone it is a practical application of that philosophy.

Recently a patient asked me to explain the fundamentals of Chiropractic philosophy to him.  As he was interested in Daoism I phrased it in a Daoist way.  I thought you might like to read it too.

The Dao of Chiropractic

Chiropractors believe that there is an intelligence behind the manifest universe. They call this the Universal Intelligence. They don't deify it; they simply believe that the universe acts as though it was intelligent.

In order to experience itself the Universal Intelligence expresses itself in two ways, as force and form or, if you prefer, energy and matter. Chiropractors call these two expressions Universal Force and Universal Matter.

There is a dynamic interplay between the two. The Universal Matter is influenced and affected by the Universal Force while the Universal Force is modulated and contained by the Universal Matter.

The dynamic interplay between Universal Force and Universal Matter is responsible for everything in the universe. Things in the universe differ from each other when the interplay between the Universal Force and Universal Matter differs.

That part of the Universal Intelligence that is within each of us Chiropractors call the Innate Intelligence. It isn't separate from, or different to, the Universal Intelligence, it is simply a linguistic device to save having to say "that part of the Universal Intelligence that is within each of us" all the time.

In a similar manner the Universal Matter out of which we are composed is called the Innate Matter and the Universal Force that flow through us is called the Innate Force.

The Innate Intelligence, the Innate Force and the Innate Matter are known as the Triune of Life.

Why is it called the Triune of Life; what is Life? Well quite simply Chiropractors believe that life is the expression of the Innate Intelligence through the dynamic interplay between the Innate Force and the Innate Matter.

The more completely the Innate Intelligence can express itself the more life you have. It follows then that the more completely the Innate Force and the Innate Matter can interact then the healthier and more vital you become.

The Universal Intelligence is perfect by definition so it follows that the Innate Intelligence is also perfect as it is that part of the Universal Intelligence that is within each of us.

Unfortunately the Innate Matter and the Innate Force very often aren't perfect as we are subject to various traumata, accidents, illnesses and stresses that affect them.

This is where seeing a Chiropractor comes in to the picture. The Innate Intelligence constantly strives to bring the Innate Matter and the Innate Force back into harmony. The Innate Intelligence is mediated through the nervous system. The nervous system is disturbed when there are subluxations (a partial misalignment of a bone or a joint, which impinges upon the nerves that run through and around that joint).

As Chiropractors, if we can restore the normal functioning to the nervous system by adjusting the suluxations then the Innate Intelligence can express itself more fully, which in turn brings the Innate Force and the Innate Matter back into balance, leading to greater health, wellness and vitality.

Chiropractic physically realigns you to the intelligence behind the manifest universe allowing it to express itself more fully through you.
